AUSTRALIAN WAR ANIMALS - 100 YEARS ON
by Nigel Allsopp

Australia was one of many countries during WWI that used animals to aid its fight against its enemies. In fact, both Axis and Allies used millions of various types in places as remote as the shores of Gallipoli, the sands of Beersheba, the rain and mud fronts of France, and the arctic Alps. These animals, Australia’s four-legged diggers, had no choice in if or where they served, and many thousands gave the ultimate sacrifice. Sadly one thing they had in common, whether a Waler horse, military working dog, or a carrier pigeon, was that all but a few never returned home.

Nigel Allsopp’s book tells the untold history of Australia’s animal warriors, 100 years ago, their continued use in warfare in present day operations, and the fight to get their deeds officially recognised; a struggle that still goes on today.

MÉLODIE
by Arika Mizubayashi

Mélodie is the heartfelt memoir of a Japanese man's life with his Golden Retriever—or rather of his Golden Retriever's life with him. Fidelity, patience, attachment, love and family ties are illuminated through the demands and joys of living with a large dog in a small apartment in Tokyo.

Akira Mizubayashi's attachment to Mélodie profoundly transforms how he lives his life and makes him reimagine the nature of relationships between humans and animals.

In his homage to Mélodie, Mizubayashi offers a moving account of faithful love and compromise.

WYLIE

The Brave Street Dog Who Never Gave Up
by Pen Farthing

When people gave up on Wylie, Wylie refused to give up on people. For a street dog born in the city of Kandahar, Afghanistan, to be crowned top dog at Scruffts, a competition for crossbreeds held during Crufts, the largest dog show on earth, is nothing short of a miracle. But for Wylie, the gentle, cropped-eared ball of fur, miracles seemed to happen quite regularly.

Beaten and abused at the hands of uncaring humans, Wylie suffered terrible injuries that needed urgent treatment. Rescued close to death, with hacked off ears and a severed tail, he was attended to by soldiers who feared he would not last the night. Astonishingly he did, only to return days later with new injuries.

However a lifeline came when he was handed over to animal welfare Charity Nowzad and flown to Britain in the hope of finding a new life. But would anyone take a chance on a seemingly undomesticated stray? Luckily for Wylie his biggest adventure yet was about to begin.

A SOLDIER, A DOG AND A BOY
by Libby Hathorn, illustrated by Phil Lesnie

A moving story, told completely in dialogue, about a young Australian soldier in the battle of the Somme. Walking through the fields away from the front, he finds what he thinks is a stray dog, and decides to adopt it as a mascot for his company.

Then he meets Jacques, the homeless orphan boy who owns the dog. The soldier realises that Jacques needs the dog more - and perhaps needs his help as well.

With stunning illustrations from Phil Lesnie, this is a deeply moving celebration of friendship in times of war.

This book was inspired by Libby Hathorn's months of research on her uncle, who survived Gallipoli but went on to fight at the Battle of the Somme and was killed there in 1917 at just twenty years old.
